Our Commitment

The Community Land Trust model is a long-term solution that breaks the cycle of escalating housing costs. Instead of temporary affordability measures, our approach ensures that homes remain accessible for future generations.

Keeping Whidbey Island as a place where people of all income levels can live, work and build a future.

At Home on Whidbey, we recognize the urgent need for permanent affordable housing solutions that ensure community members can continue to live, work, and thrive on Whidbey Island.

Home on Whidbey is committed to addressing this challenge with practical, sustainable, and community-driven solutions that create lasting change.

Our CLT model creates opportunities for homeownership while preserving the character, diversity, and vitality of Whidbey Island. Our approach focuses on 5 core principles:

Creating Permanently Affordable Homes

Home on Whidbey is committed to increasing access to homeownership by developing affordable, income-qualified homes. Our approach will ensure families and individuals can build equity, establish roots, and secure long-term financial stability while remaining integral members of the community.

Prioritizing Local Workforce & Families

We believe Whidbey Island should remain a place where teachers, healthcare workers, artists, small business owners, service industry employees, and young families can live and thrive. Our model will provide an accessible pathway to homeownership for those who are vital to the island’s economy and culture but often priced out of the market.

Preventing Displacement & Strengthening Community

With rising home prices and a significant portion of housing designated as second homes, many lifelong residents are struggling to stay. The CLT model will ensure that homes remain in the hands of local residents, helping to prevent displacement, maintain community diversity, and protect Whidbey’s unique character.

Partnering for Impact

Collaboration is key. We will work closely with local government, nonprofits, businesses, and philanthropic organizations to secure funding, acquire lands, and develop innovative housing solutions. Through public-private partnerships, we will leverage resources to maximize affordability and sustainability.

Building for the Future: Sustainability & Stewardship

Our homes will be designed with sustainability in mind. We will prioritize energy-efficient designs, durable materials, and responsible land use practices that align with Whidbey’s environmental values. Additionally, CLT homeowners will become stewards of the land, fostering a deep sense of connection and responsibility within the community.

“The greatest aspect of the CLT model, is that the organization only has to purchase the home once at market rates. Afterwards, the land which is 20% of the cost of the purchase is no longer part of the overall price and the home appreciates at a capped rate. This approach is inflation and recession proof for home ownership into the future.”
