Visionary and Friend
Whidbey Island lost a friend, a mentor, and a champion this month. The passing of Nancy Nordhoff cannot be underestimated. Her impact within our communities will echo for decades.
“A leader is best when people barely know she exists. When her work is done, her aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.”
– Lao Tzu, ancient Chinese philosopher and writer
She educated boards, politicians, executive directors, activists, and regular folks on how to harness their passion into lasting solutions. She sought no recognition and kept her low profile as her trademark - much to the consternation of many nonprofit organizations.
She believed in “community” with her soul. She believed that everyone could give to a significant level either with funding, time, or talent. She taught us that all giving was important, worthy, and essential in bringing forth positive change.
She saw the potential in Whidbey Island and nurtured that special island essence into a multitude of projects and programs that many today take for granted.
So, let’s celebrate the amazing life of Nancy whenever we are walking the wooded trails or driving along the back roads of Whidbey and feel that island spirit within us - tell Nancy thanks.
Nancy, we are so glad you believed in us.
Rest in peace dear friend.
